The hours dragged by. We stopped for gas and bathroom breaks, feasting on stale sandwiches and sodas as we drove. T’s mood had improved substantially, and we fell back into our normal pattern—her analyzing data, and me giving her positive feedback with an occasional shot at her nerdy disposition. She’d shoot me looks of mock annoyance, but I could tell she enjoyed my compliments of her analytically ability. They were more observations than anything. She really was an excellent meteorologist.

“Look,” T exclaimed, gathering my attention from the highway. “We have red!”

I glanced at the radar, growing as excited as she was. “Look at that hook,” I said. “A definite twister.”

“Check out the barometer,” she screeched, bouncing up and down like a kid who had to pee. “The bottom’s dropping out. Holy shit, we may have a big one happening.”

“Where?” I demanded, my fingers hovering over the Tundra’s navigation screen.

Studying the laptop, T muttered under her breath. “Head for Lake Falls. It’s not far from the state line into Mississippi.”

I plugged the information into the system. “Got it. We’ll stay on the highway until we cross the border, then head north. Keep an eye out for any cops.”

Pressing the accelerator, I felt grateful for the full tank of gas and the truck’s smooth power. Exceeding the speed limit, I passed vehicles left and right, outracing the semis while praying the Arkansas state patrol was otherwise occupied. I could do without a speeding ticket.

“Take that exit,” T instructed, stabbing her finger at the Tundra’s monitor. “Then stay to the right.”

“You sure?” I shot a swift glance at the laptop.

“Yeah,” she exclaimed, piercing my ears with her sharp screech. “This is gonna be huge—I can feel it.”

“Let’s hope your gut is right on,” I said with a grin.

Without slowing much, I drove the truck onto the exit ramp, skidding past the stop sign while wheeling to the right. The two-lane blacktop’s speed limit was fifty and the truck’s speedometer read eighty. Hoping I didn’t round a curve and run smack into something—or someone—I kept my foot heavy on the gas.

“There!” T cried, pointing through the windshield. “It’s forming right there.”

“Holy shit,” I muttered.

Rain spattered the glass while lightning stabbed downward from the swirling black thunderheads. The wind howled, easily heard over the Tundra’s roaring engine. A cracking boom of thunder not only vibrated the entire truck but blasted into my ears like an explosion. The daylight faded into near darkness with the swiftness of a black curtain falling.

Yanking off her seatbelt, T knelt on the seat to scramble in the back. Bringing her Canon video camera to the front, she rolled her window down and stuck the camera out, filming the birth of what could easily have been an F5 tornado.

“Keep ‘er steady,” I yelled at T as she recorded, her eye to the viewfinder. “Keep going, dead on target.”

I’d witnessed hundreds of tornados in my career. I’d seen the destruction of entire towns caused by these beasts. I’d studied them from every angle, from birth until they pass, from small funnels to waterspouts.
